A Taste of Penang (Part 1)
Penang, a.k.a the ultimate foodie’s paradise, has been known to give outstanding first impressions to all tourists. The culture itself is so diverse, making the food even more exotic and exquisite. I will admit one thing though, Penang’s food isn’t the healthiest, but you’re on a vacation, and so is your tummy! So give yourself a break, and let’s take a look at our editor’s top picks.
- Char Koay Teow
Take a number, yes! We all love this dish. I mean, who wouldn’t? Thick flat noodles to make sure you get a full mouth of flavour, fried with pork lard just to give you that extra taste your body’s been craving, succulent and tender cockles to smoothen out the transitions from an “Oh wow” to “Marvellous”. The best part? You can get this plate of carbs for only RM6.50 ($1.60 / £1.23).
Siam Road Char Koay Teow – 82, Jalan Siam, George Town, 10400 George Town, Pulau Pinang.
- Assam Laksa
First-timers might get all confused with this one. Firstly, take a whiff. Yes, odd isn’t it? Smells queer and sour (yikes). Now take your first bite. How is this possible? It’s spicy, sour and savoury, all at the same time! The piquant sauce in this really stimulates your salivary glands and leaves you craving for more. If you dive in deeper into the flavoursome taste of the soup, you can’t help but notice that there’s a briny, tangy fish aftertaste. Yes, the secret ingredient is mackerel to this bowl of delight which only costs RM4 ($0.98 / £0.19).
Pasar Air Itam Laksa – 1, Jalan Pasar, Pekan Ayer Itam, 11500 Ayer Itam, Pulau Pinang.
- Hokkien Mee
If you haven’t tried this, you haven’t been to Penang. The egg noodles and rice vermicelli blend in effortlessly together with the sweet and savoury soup. Fun fact: The soup of this dish is made of the unwanted parts of shrimps and prawns combined with pork ribs. Here’s a tip, add on pork belly slices to your order to put in the WOW factor. This hearty meal will cost you RM4 ($0.98 / £0.19).
888 Hokkien Mee – 67-A, Lebuh Presgrave, George Town, 10300 George Town, Pulau Pinang.
